Abstract

Experimental evidence suggests that rosemary has a wide range of biological and pharmacological activities. This study aimed at evaluating the effect of a crude hydroalcoholic extract of rosemary (CHER) on chromosomal aberrations induced by methyl methanesulfonate (MMS) in cultured meristematic cells of Allium cepa. The experiments were conducted at three different mutagenic concentrations of CHER and concentrations showing no mutagenic activity. In the antimutagenicity experiments, a combination of these concentrations of CHER with the mutagenic agent MMS indicate that CHER had a chemopreventive effect in cultured A. cepa meristematic cells. CHER was effective in reducing DNA damage and is therefore considered chemopreventive and antimutagenic.

Keywords
